The Origin of Deepavali

Diwali, also called Deepavali, or Diwali Deevali is one of the most important festivals in Hinduism and has its origins in India. The word is derived from the Sanskrit dipavali, which means a row of lights. The oil lamps, Dipa, traditionally baked clay lamp, or Dia Diya, cotton and cotton fuse clarified butter (ghee).

* The first day is called Dhanteras or Dhan-trayodashi, it falls on the 13th day of the month Ashwin. The word Dhan means wealth. This day is very important for society.

* The second day is known as Diwali chotti (small Diwali) or Naraka Chaturdasi, it falls on the 14th day of the month Ashwin. The legend relates that day King Bali who was caught demigods.

* The third day of the festival Diwali is the most important day of Lakshmi-Puja, which is entirely dedicated to the goddess Lakshmi. This day is also known as Chopada-puja.
