Bisameibisch

The Bisameibisch (Abelmoschus) is a plant genus that belongs to the mallow family (Malvaceae). The species are native to subtropical and tropical areas of southern and southeastern Asia and northern Australia.

Description

The Bisameibisch species are one-, two-or multi-annual herbaceous plants, the plant height reached 0.2 to 4 meters. The plants are often hairy. The alternate and spirally arranged, stalked leaves are usually three to siebenlappig. Stipules are present.

The flowers are usually single in the leaf axils. The hermaphroditic, but somewhat flowers are five parts. The Außenkelch is five to fünfzehnlappig. The five green sepals are fused. The five intensely colored petals are fused funnel.

In the subfamily Malvoideae the many stamens are fused tube surrounding a stamp, called the Columna. Five carpels are fused into a oberständigen ovary. Pollination is by insects (entomophily). It is a usually hairy, 20-50 mm long formed capsule fruit that contains many (30-50) seeds.

Systematics

The class was in 1787 by German botanist Friedrich Kasimir Medicus positioned. It noted, in some species of the genus Hibiscus characteristic features of style and stigma, and took this occasion to describe a new genus.

The name of the genus is derived from the name of the plant in the Arab world and means father of musk (abu-el-mosk). The designation goes back to the musky scent of the seeds.
