Ptychopetalum

Ptychopetalum is a small genus, contains only two species of small trees that grow in tropical South America, and five tropical Africa. The two South American varieties, the Ptychopetalum olacoides (found in Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname) and Ptychopetalum uncinatum (found only in Brazil), are used interchangeably as the remedies of the South American herbal medicine, being known Muira puama (invigorating remedy, and becoming reproductive). The variety most commonly used is Ptychopetalum olacoides, it has a higher content of lupeol (one of the active principles of the plant).

A completely different tree species in Brazil, Liriosma ovata, also goes by the common name of Muira puama (and is often sold in commerce as such), but is a completely different tree with a different phytochemical components.
