Liquidambar orientalis

Liquidambar orientalis is a species belonging to the family Altingiaceae.

It is a deciduous tree of the genus Liquidambar native to the eastern Mediterranean region, which lies mainly in floodplains of southwestern Turkey.

Located in Tertiary forests of specially protected area between Dalyan and Koycegiz in Muğla province, where an area of 286 hectares is set aside as a nature reserve and arboretum for the preservation of the species. A large colony also around Marmaris. These two areas are the most popular although a large population that spans nearly 100 acres also located in an inner region in the province of Aydın between the districts of Film and Umurlu Kosk. However, another forest area (88.5 hectares) under protection is in Burdur in the district next to the reservoir Bucak Karacaören on the way to Antalya. The trees are also found locally in Denizli 's in the districts and Tavas Beyağaç. The total area of pure stands of sweetgum in Turkey covers 1348 hectares, all in southwestern regions of the country. The current extension is a marked decline since the 1940s who had the level of 6000-7000 hectares, although the security measures and infrastructure in place since the 1980s has helped stem the loss of the colonies and led to slight improvements.

It's a big tree to 20 m in height, which is highly branched and with a thick purple gray bark, which has secretory canals in the superficial part of the cord. The leaves are bright green, slapping, with three or five lobes with serrated margins, shining the beam and pale on the underside. The flowers are white and are grouped into male and female catkins. The first are conical and the second protruding. The fruit consists of two oblong capsules with an internal cell with numerous seeds.
