Sanicula europaea

The forest-Sanicle (Sanicula europaea), is a scattered occurring in central Europe Umbelliferae (Apiaceae). It blooms in May and June.

The species is a perennial herbaceous plant (hemicryptophytes). It is about 20-60 cm high. The leaves are undergraduate, dark green and serrated edge. The teeth have a grannenartige tip. The stems have few leaves or he is completely leafless. Both the cone and the umbellules bearing bracts. The umbellules are of more or less hemispherical shape. The flowers are white (rare pink). The fruits are about 4-5 mm long, brown, black and thick with curved spines hackly occupied.

Sanicula europaea grows individually in shaded, fresh to moderately dry, usually calcareous, basic points, mostly on clay, more rarely on Schluffböden. It grows preferably in beech and hornbeam forests, rare in (dry) alluvial forests.

The forest-Sanicle comes in Europe from the Mediterranean to Scandinavia, North Africa, Asia Minor, Caucasus, Iran and Siberia.

Sanicula europaea is occurring scattered in Germany, but common. Only in West Germany and calcareous mountains means it is less common or absent.
