The Rotwurzel-sage (Salvia medicine as) is a species of the genus Sage (Salvia) in the mint family (Lamiaceae). He also referred to as the Danshen dried roots are found particularly in traditional Chinese medicine.
The Rotwurzel-sage grows as a perennial herbaceous plant reaching 40-80 cm plant height. The thick, succulent Pflahlwurzel is outside scarlet. The erect, highly branched stems are hairy. The leaves are divided into the petiole and leaf blade. The intensely hairy petiole is 1.3 to 7.5 cm long. The leaf blade is easily divided up. If the leaves are divided, then there are the usually three to five, rarely up to seven discs each composed of a 2-14 mm long stalk and a 1.5 to 8 cm long, 1-4 cm wide blade. The leaf or Blättchenspreiten are different shaped and lobed with hairy margins.
The terminal or lateral, approximately 4.5 to 17 cm long, spiciform inflorescences are usually intensely hairy and contain six to many flowers and bracts. The flower stalk is 3-4 mm in length. The hermaphroditic flower is zygomorph. The five purple, about 1.1 inches long sepals are fused and bell-shaped ends in two approximately equal length cup lips with ciliated edges, the lip cup ends in two teeth. The five blue-violet or white petals are hairy 2 to 2.7 inches long and glandular. The Kronoberlippe is 1.2 to 1.5 cm long. The Kronunterlippe is shorter with a 5 × 10 mm up to large central lobe and about 3 mm wide side lobes. The filaments are 3.5 to 4 mm long. The flowering period extends from April to August.
The ellipsoidal nutlets are about 3.2 × 1.5 mm. The fruits mature from September to October.
